About our White Sage Smudges: Smudge (literally: smoking fire) in sticks or bundles is an all-natural ceremonial incense used by Native Americans, such as in sweat houses.

It is possible that the use of smoking plants and resins originated in ancient times, when lighting fires in caves. Finally, certain species of smoke were used as protection against invisible ghosts and thoughts.

To apply these protective and healing effects, the leaves and resin were burned to create smoke. With large feathers, this smoke was then used to stroke a person or object. In addition, the smoke of certain plants was used in healing practices, while the smoke of other plants was used for their more general properties.

Smudge smoke was created by placing dried herbs or herbs on smoldering coals, or by burning dried herbs in a ceramic bowl or large shell.

If white sage is burned, it drives out evil spirits. Good spirits are negatively affected by smoke; they enjoy sage.
